The good stuff

What really clicked for me was how simple it made key management. I used to keep secrets in plaintext files or rely on environment variables that leaked all too easily. The not-so-good

It’s not exactly beginner-friendly. The interface is minimal to the point of being confusing at first. There’s no tutorial, no tooltips. I spent ten minutes figuring out how to add a new repo because the menu wasn’t obvious. Also, no macOS app icon yet - it runs as a background process, which feels odd when you expect a proper app window. And honestly, since it’s unknown developer and no downloads listed, I’d hesitate to use it for anything mission-critical unless you’re comfortable with open-source transparency. If you need real-time collaboration or CI/CD integration, this isn’t going to cut it. It’s more for solo devs who want peace of mind than teams needing polish.

Bottom line

If you’re a Mac user who values privacy and wants a free, straightforward way to manage encrypted keys and host private Git repos, foks - Download for Mac is worth trying. It’s not perfect, but it does what it promises without nickel-and-diming you. Just don’t trust it with your startup’s source code - save it for side projects where security matters but perfection doesn’t. Free and functional? That’s a win.
