The good stuff

It’s wild how much detail it gives you at a glance. The real-time heatmap of nearby networks? Instantly spotted the clutter in the 2.4 GHz band - like a crowded subway station with everyone shouting at once. I found one network using channel 11, which is technically outside the legal range here, and another running on overlapping channels. Just moving my own router to channel 1 or 11 (depending on what’s free) made a noticeable difference. The visualization of signal strength over time helped me confirm I wasn’t just imagining the drop-offs. And yeah, it’s free - no trial, no paywall, just install and go.

The not-so-good

But let’s be honest - it’s not for everyone. The interface looks like it was built in 2010, and the learning curve is real. If you’ve never touched a spectrum analyzer or seen a dBm reading before, you’ll feel lost. There’s no hand-holding. And the "physical grouping view" sounds cool until you realize it’s just a list of access points with no visual map. Also, no export options for reports. Want to send the data to someone else? Too bad. It’s not even clear if it works on newer Windows versions - I ran it fine on Win 10, but it didn’t scream “I’m updated.”

Bottom line

If you’re the type who likes to tinker with your Wi-Fi setup and aren’t scared of numbers, InSSIDer - Download for Windows is still one of the better free tools out there. It won’t fix everything, but it’ll tell you where the problem is. Not for casual users - but if you’re serious about optimizing your network, it’s worth a download. A solid free option that does what it says, even if it doesn’t look great doing it.
