The good stuff

It actually works pretty well for basic tasks. I asked it to generate a simple Python script to parse JSON data, and it gave me clean, working code in under ten seconds. No fluff, no weird formatting. And it handles plain text prompts really smoothly - if you’re typing out what you want, it understands. The interface is minimal, which is nice when you’re just trying to get something done without distractions. It also doesn’t ask for a ton of permissions, which is a win for privacy. If you’re just looking for a lightweight way to get code ideas on the go, this isn’t terrible.

The not-so-good

But here’s the thing - it’s not built for real development. You can’t edit or save your work inside the app, and there’s no syntax highlighting or even line numbers. I tried pasting in a longer chunk of JavaScript, and it choked on indentation. Also, no history. Every time I reopen it, it starts fresh. That’s annoying if you’re building something step by step. And the version info says “1” - that feels sketchy. Not a lot of trust in a free app with no clear developer or updates. Plus, it only runs on Android 13 and up, so if you’re still on an older device, you’re out of luck. Honestly, it’s more of a novelty than a real tool. If you’re serious about coding, you’d be better off using something like GitHub Copilot on a proper device.

Bottom line

If you’re bored on a train and want to play around with AI-generated code snippets, Kimi for AI Coding for Android is free and kinda functional. But don’t expect anything solid. It’s not worth downloading if you’re actually trying to build something. Stick with better tools on desktop unless you’re just killing time. For now, it’s a fun curiosity - nothing more.
