The good stuff

The keyword filtering is surprisingly solid. I typed in “climate policy” and “solar energy,” and it pulled in articles from Reuters, BBC, and The Guardian - all within a day of publication. No junk. No clickbait. Just clean, timely stuff. I used the shortcode to drop a 5-article feed right into my sidebar, and it looked decent without needing any CSS tweaks. Also, being able to sort by date or relevance made a difference - sometimes you want fresh takes, other times you want the most cited story. And the ability to star articles? Not a game-changer, but nice for keeping track of big ones.

The not-so-good

It’s not exactly flashy. The default layout is basic - plain links with titles and dates. If you’re after something that looks like a magazine feature, this isn’t it. Also, no real analytics. You can’t see how many clicks your feed gets, which kind of defeats the purpose if you're trying to measure engagement. And yeah, the developer is unknown. That’s a red flag if you’re paranoid about security, but it hasn’t caused any issues on my site so far. Plus, it’s free - which is huge. If you need more features, you’d probably be better off with something like Feedzy, but that costs money.

Bottom line

If you run a WordPress site and want to toss in live news without spending a dime, NewsPlugin for WordPress is worth a try. It does the basics well and doesn’t slow anything down. But don’t expect bells and whistles. It’s not for people who want a polished, data-rich news hub. If you’re okay with simple, functional, and free - go ahead and install it. I’ve been using it for months now, and it’s still doing its job quietly in the background.
